The Adventures of Jade and Wolf – where to begin? Publishing this book has been a dream come true. I have always been an avid reader and always wanted to have a book of my very own. In 2019, my husband and I made the decision to move our family to Italy. Once there and settled in, Covid hit, and suddenly we were in lockdown.
At home with our two-year-old daughter, finding ways to entertain her were constant. We were always using our imaginations; star lamps and jumping on the bed became space adventures, even bath time became a voyage through the rain forest.
Eventually I decided to take these ideas further and put pen to paper. Using my daughter and dog, Wolf, as my inspiration, I wrote stories for kids taking simple everyday experiences and turning them into adventures. From going to the park, the beach or getting outside on a rainy day, imagination can make these events incredible. I wrote these stories, simple and rhyming, and would read them to my daughter. Seeing her reactions made me want to share the stories with others.
Years passed, we added a second dog to our family and decided to move to back to Canada.
Finding Brown Paper Fox and seeing Kelsey’s illustrations felt like it was meant to be. The illustration style was exactly as I pictured the stories in my head. Taking a chance during open submissions and receiving the email saying “I’d love to work with you” made me so happy I took that chance. Seeing this book become a reality, with my name on the cover, there are no words to describe it.
If I take anything away from the past few years and my experiences, it is to always take a chance, always believe in yourself and always use your imagination.
