Go On Outside by Rebecca du Preez is a lively picture book that celebrates the joys of playing and being outside in nature. The illustrations by Lauren McLardy are fun and whimsical and evoke children's artwork, which may inspire the children who read it or who listen to it when a parent reads it aloud to them. Without being preachy, the story encourages children (and their parents) to step away from the electronic world we all seem to inhabit and soak up the multitudes of adventures that being outside can bring: to listen to nature, take in the smells and colors, immerse themselves in the tactile pleasures of the world outside.

The text and illustrations work perfectly together, and the text is appropriate for the age level: pre-readers and beginning readers, and interesting enough for adults to find reading it aloud multiple times without wanting to scream.

I was very much charmed by this book!

Thank you to Rebecca du Preez, Lauren McLardy, Brown Paper Fox publishers, and BookSirens for the opportunity to read this Advance Review Copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Oh this book is just gorgeous! 🌿✨ Go On Outside is a beautiful, rhythmic story that celebrates the simple joys of outdoor play and the wonders waiting right beyond the doorstep. Each page flows with a lovely sense of movement and rhyme, gently reminding children of all the amazing things they can do when they step away from screens and head into nature.

It’s full of warmth, heart, and gentle life lessons encouraging kids not only to explore and imagine, but also to be kind, thoughtful, and connected to the world around them. The illustrations capture that carefree childhood magic perfectly, muddy knees, big smiles, and all.

Such a wonderful read-aloud for classrooms or bedtime, Go On Outside is a gentle nudge to slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and rediscover the joy of simply being present in the world.

Colourful artwork

There are a plethora of ideas for kids of things to do outside. However, the best aspects of the book are the multiple activities contained within the artwork. With your child you can talk about colours, count the little flowers etc, find the tiny animals, count the fish …… the list could go on! Definitely also a grandma gift book!
